We as dental professionals may be a little biased, but we think teeth are pretty awesome! Here are some fun facts about teeth you probably didn’t know:

  1. The enamel on the outer surface of your teeth is the hardest part of your entire body.tooth cartoon
  2. Your teeth started to form before you were even born – but they didn’t erupt until you were six to 12 months old.
  3. In 1994, a West Virginia inmate braided dental floss into a rope, scaled the wall, and escaped!
  4. Your mouth produces 25,000 quarts of saliva in a lifetime. That’s enough to fill two swimming pools! (Ewwwww…..)
  5. In the course of a lifetime, the total amount of time the average person spends brushing their teeth is equivalent to 38.5 days.
  6. One third of your tooth is underneath your gums. That means that you only see two thirds of your tooth’s length.
  7. US consumers buy a total of 14 million gallons of toothpaste each year!
  8. Human adults have 32 teeth. Mosquitos have about 42, and snails have about 27 (on their tongue)!
  9. If you don’t floss, you miss cleaning 40% of your tooth’s surface. Don’t forget to brush and floss each and every day!
  10. Giraffes only have bottom teeth.
  11. According to Guinness Book of World Records 2002, the most valuable tooth belonged to Sir Isaac Newton. It was set in a ring and sold in London for $3,633 (which would be equivalent to $35,700 dollars today)!
  12. The Crocodile Bird flies into the open mouth of a crocodile and cleans its teeth!
  13. George Washington never had wooden teeth. His dentures were actually made out of hippopotamus tusk, elephant ivory, gold, and human teeth!
  14. In China, September 20th is an official holiday known as “Love Your Teeth Day”.
  15. The plaque on your teeth is home to 300 types of living bacteria. Makes you want to brush your teeth, doesn’t it?
