A dental filling can often be used to repair a tooth with a minor fracture or a small cavity. If you struggle to maintain good oral hygiene habits you might suffer a new cavity on the previously repaired tooth. When this happens there might not be sufficient healthy tooth enamel remaining for Dr. Allan Stevenson to repair the tooth with a second dental filling.

In a situation like this, Dr. Allan Stevenson might recommend treating the tooth with a dental crown. This restoration treatment will take two separate appointments to replace the entire tooth enamel layer with a special dental material.

Dr. Allan Stevenson will start by numbing the tooth before using a drill to remove the previous dental filling and all remaining tooth enamel. This leaves behind a small post of healthy dentin called an abutment which will eventually anchor your new crown.

Dr. Allan Stevenson’s will then prepare a detailed impression of the abutment before securing a temporary crown over it. The impression will then be sent to a professional dental lab where your dental crown will be created.

A member of Dr. Allan Stevenson’s staff will call you to schedule the second appointment when your new crown is ready. The temporary crown will be removed and Dr. Allan Stevenson will cement the dental crown onto the abutment to complete the dental restoration process.
